This page will be populated with some tips and tutorials designed to help Bath Photographic Society Members in learning and developing their photographic and digital manipulation skills. As more tutorials become available they will be added to the page.

  • Dodge & Burn. The Dodge & Burn tools in Photoshop can occasionally increase contrast. Use the method outlined in this tutorial to avoid that. This method avoids contrast increase, adds flexibility and is a great method of darkening skies as well as burning in foregrounds.
     
  • An Introduction to Colour Management. Colour management is particularly important in digital imaging but little understood by many. It is an important aspect in ensuring that the colours in your image file are reproduced accurately on your printer as well as displayed correctly on screen. This introduction is designed to explain colour management and how to apply it.
     
  • Saving for Web & Digital Projection. Those who may be uncertain of the best way to save images for web and/or digital projection may find this tutorial helpful.
     
  • Setting Up Curves For Colour Correction. A colour cast, whether slight or obvious, is often not noticed until you reach the printing stage. Follow this procedure to eradicate colour casts.
     
  • High Pass Sharpening. High Pass sharpening is an alternative method to the Unsharp Mask method which can produce equally good results and sometimes better with less risk of showing Mackie lines.
     
  • Create A Personalized Greetings Card. Create greetings cards from your own photographs to send to friends and relatives.
     
  • Shadow/Highlight Command. Using the Shadow/Highlight command is a quick and effective way to balance the highlights and shadows in an image. In particular it will lighten shadows with ease.
     
  • An Introduction to Layer Blend Modes. The use of layers in Photoshop is a core skill necessary to fully utilise the flexibility and power of the application. Layer blend modes extend that flexibility.
     
  • The Pen Tool. The Pen Tool is one that many Photoshoppers shy away from as, initially, it can appear to be complicated and difficult to use. This tutorial will remove your fears.
